Two fast-moving import businesses – one total commitment to customer care.
Frank Doherty, Managing Director – Reydon Sports & SAC
Frank Doherty runs two buoyant import/export businesses. The first, Reydon Sports is the UK’s largest wholesale importer of sports equipment. With a range that includes over 6,500 products, the business regularly ships goods from China, India, Taiwan, Pakistan and Vietnam. Trading for over 30 years, Frank was handed the reigns of this family business just over two years ago.
However, Frank had already built a successful electronics business, bringing in over 650 products from 60+ suppliers in China. As the sole buyer for this business, Frank was very much hands on in directing the supply chain and operations for the business and had taken steps to simplify and consolidate orders from multiple carriers to a single freight provider. As Frank explains, ‘My goal was to run a streamlined business. My focus is on how best to make money – any complexity has the potential to compromise that, so simplifying things made perfect sense.’
Applying the same principles to the supply chain for Reydon Sports made perfect sense to Frank. Involving more volume and two buyers sourcing products from more diverse locations offered even more opportunity to simplify freight arrangements and realise efficiencies by working with a single freight partner.
Frank deals directly with Sarah, his contact at Ligentia. Frank appreciates the personal, professional support that Sarah offers: ‘Working with Sarah at Ligentia makes my life easier. She takes the hard work out of my shipping arrangements and she works in a way that suits me. Most of the time, we’re connecting by email, but I know she’ll pick up the phone if she needs to let me know about something and vice versa. It’s easy to do business and that suits me down to the ground.’
Sarah explains: ‘When we help Frank with planning, we’re thinking about ways to avoid any extra charges at origin. If there’s high demand for product, we might consider air as a faster options. And we always have to keep a keen eye on tariff bandings to make sure we’re giving best advice on duty.’ For Sarah, the emphasis is on clearly understanding Frank’s requirements and the business’ priorities and then harnessing the deep knowledge of the Ligentia team to deliver a reliable, supportive service of the highest quality.
Both of Frank’s businesses are growing and for SAC in particular, there is a clear agenda for growth. Looking to double turnover in the next 3-5 years means more containers, new facilities, new systems and a new web site. With growth come additional challenges – more product, from more suppliers at more locations, but with quality support and dedicated service from Ligentia, both of Frank’s businesses are in great shape for growth.
It’s our job to make the complex business of freight forwarding as simple as possible for our customers. Getting started is super easy too, just drop us a line and we’ll be straight back in touch.
